And thus the series continues. If you’re interested, you can read Part 1 and Part 2 for a good introduction to this post, also for additional suggestions if you haven’t been reading this blog long enough to have seen them. Essentially, I’m just rattling off books that my kid and I have enjoyed, either myself or just her or both of us, as well as stuff to avoid. Take it with a grain of salt, I guess, since this is just the opinion of a former teacher and his toddler. Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter: The kid was actually introduced to this popular series through my wife’s old copy of All By Myself, where Little Critter goes down his list of things that he can do without help. As with the entire series, the book is rather tongue-in-cheek and Little Critter is only able to do things with a certain degree of success no matter what he states. That’s pretty much how the entire series goes. Everything is told from the perspective of Little Critter, and the humor is that there is a bit of a disconnect between what he says is going on and what the pictures show is actually [...]

Since this news was sent to my via e-mail through my local writing group, I thought I’d just put this out. One of the self-published authors I know isn’t just self-published anymore. Jen Steffen, whose The Other Side I had written about in a previous post, is now published in a British horror anthology called Stitched Up. You can purchase her story, “Brand New Lover”, along with 11 other tales here. Insert irony that I’m promoting a local author being published by a British house here.

New York has its pizza that you can fold in half. Philly has its cheesesteak. Chicago has its dog. But Minneapolis holds the trump card on deliciousness with the Jucy Lucy. It’s a burger, a thick patty with a molten surprise of American (or other) cheese tucked inside. Do not, I repeat, do not go straight for the burger when it comes to you, you’re best to nibble a few fries to let the cheese cool. Unless your mouth is coated with teflon, that is. It’s damn tasty is what it is, though, and you can find variations of it at several establishments in the Minneapolis area, as laid out by the somewhat helpful Jucy Lucy Restaurants site. (As an aside, no, I’m not going to entertain the idea that it’s spelled “Juicy”. You can make all the arguments about the origins of the Jucy Lucy, but a guy named “Matt” isn’t going to accept any notion that this delicacy was created at the 5-8 Club. If it’s spelled “right”, you’ve got the wrong bar.) I say “somewhat” helpful in that the site is, at best, just another blog-style offering from The Deets and not the comprehensive user-generated, owner-curated site [...]

Take a look on the right, and you’ll likely notice that I have a series of links along the side. A lot of them are local blogs, information and minutiae, as a goal of mine has been to have a local focus in my commentary. And now I’ve added yet another category, local(ish) authors, to start getting the word out about people that I’ve brushed elbows with that are venturing into the world of writing fiction as a profession. With the exception of one, these are people that I’ve met during National Novel Writing Month, that borderline insane writing exercise that occurs every November, and have continued to talk with every three weeks as we meet to talk about writing fiction as work and fun. Moira Rogers – We’ll get the “ish” part of “local(ish)” out of the way with the most successful thus far of the authors on my list of links. Moira Rogers is actually two people, Bree and Donna, a duo living a wee bit south of Minnesota that has just recently gotten enough ground to start looking at writing as their only career instead of something on the side. It’s no wonder, as they have quite the [...]

A few years ago, my lovely wife bought me what was possibly the greatest birthday gift she could think of, an iPod. I’m typically not the type to really latch on to a thing anymore, but this device has become a love-worn treasure. It hasn’t been so much a form of entertainment to me, I have put hours and hours of music on it that I hardly listen to (my playlist really needs to be culled), but it has been a vast source of information for me. Especially on some of these long days where I just want to hear an intelligent adult talking instead of my lovely toddler’s babbling, I have a long list of podcasts that I’ve subscribed to for one reason or another, and it is my connection to the world at large. For my news and information…. Democracy Now! – Amy Goodman’s award-winning national news broadcast is also available every morning as a video and audio podcast. I take the audio, since it’s very rare that I need the visuals to further understand what it is she’s reporting. If you want a progressive-leaning newscast that isn’t hampered by bowing to corporate advertisers’ interests, though, this is [...]

They’re doing preliminary work on moving utilities and the like, and it won’t be long before the powers that be finally break ground on only the second light rail line in the region. The Central Line is the link between the two downtowns, replacing the busiest busses in the system with a quieter, cleaner, higher capacity mode of transportation: light rail. And it will be the only truly urban line once the others (SW, Bottineau) are also built to complement the single-line “system” that we currently have in that Central will only run across Minneapolis and St. Paul and won’t have the park-and-ride lots where us suburbanites can drop our cars and be real city dwellers. This one is exclusively for the city dwellers, but not all the city dwellers seem to want all the benefits that come with it. The huge to-do going on along University Avenue is that it will negatively affect the area by, get this, increasing the value of the surrounding property. To this I say, “Well, duh!” That is the point of development and infrastructure improvements, right? To make a city more desirable to live in? And the more desirable a place is to live, [...]

I had just seen this home listed for sale in Hopkins, and my first though was about just how huge it is in comparison to the typical story-and-a-half that one finds in my town. The second thought was just how close it is to its neighbors, and the third was, “Hasn’t anyone had enough of this crap?” Houses like this are, honestly, all over town. I get the “joy” of seeing one across the street from my own home, a split-level box taking up virtually the entire property and wedged in between the oldest home on the street and a 1940′s Cape Cod. There was a big deal made of “McMansions” going up in Edina a while back, and my question is: Why hasn’t anyone in the city of Hopkins made a similar stink? McMansions, by the way, are oversized homes built in older neighborhoods of smaller homes. They’re typically about twice the size of their neighbors, take up the entire lot, and stick out like a sore thumb. More often than not, the builder has demolished a perfectly livable older house to replace it and they’ve gotten variances from the city to ignore such pesky laws as mandatory setbacks [...]
